Somló

What you must see

Somló is full of special architectural and natural attractions. Here are some of them. In our Somló tour map (available free of charge in the winery), you will also find how to get to these and what routes you should follow.

Tread-well
47.13981, 17.3702

A wooden structure modeled on treadmills. In the huge wheel, 3 m in diameter, with a treading motion, like in the squirrel wheel, it was possible to bring water from the 100 m deep well to the surface. Special architectural and technical monument.

St. Margaret's Chapel
47.14155, 17.37655

The largest chapel on the hill, built by the nuns of Vásárhely during the reign of King Matthias. It was destroyed during the Turkish occupation, then rebuilt and became a famous pilgrimage site. Behind it stands a smaller chapel erected in honor of St. John the Baptist, and next to it is a statue of Donatus, the saint of the vine-growers who keeps away hail and thunder. Next to the chapel is a 300-year-old protected linden tree that was hit by lightning, but lives on in its shoots.

Stone Kitchen
47.14215, 17.37208

It is a special natural formation, a grassy area surrounded by huge, converging basalt columns that is only open to the sky. It really is as if we are in a good-sized room, and the smoke from the fire lit here escapes in the same way as in an old kitchen. And even a window opens onto the southern slope of the hill, with the obligatory panorama of Somló.

St. Martin's Chapel
47.15228, 17.37816

It was built in the 13th century by the nuns of Vásárhely, originally it was probably the chapel of the castle. The simple wooden tower, from which which gives it a fairytale-like atmosphere, was added later. It is located among vineyards in an idyllic location where it is good to relax a bit. Next to it is the building of St. Martin's Spring, where water could be taken in the old days, now you can do it from a small pool surrounded by stone.

Erdődy Castle (Doba)
47.17065, 17.38971

As we enter the gate of the park, we find ourselves right in the middle of a painting. Huge plane trees, glittering lake, with Somló in the background, a dazzling white castle on the hilltop. It was built in 1839 by Count Károly Erdődy, Archbishop of Várad. Today it functions as a rehabilitation institute, but the huge castle park (a rarity throughout Europe), is planted with special trees. A magical experience.

Zichy Castle (Somlószőlős)
47.16818, 17.36313

Already in the 15th century a manor house stood here, the romantic style castle was built in its place in 1850. It is reminiscent of a Gothic English knight's castle, not by chance: its builder, Count Zichy-Ferraris Manó, loved his Scottish wife, who left him, all his life, and after her death he built the castle in her memory. After the 2nd World War the building had many functions: it was a council office, kindergarten and granary. It is privately owned today, but its renovation has been interrupted. Construction site, only visible from the street, but still a fantastic sight.

Séd spring
 47.14564, 17.361611

A marble plaque proudly indicates: Séd spring, decorated in 1887. Then the less demanding posterity announces with an inscription scratched in the concrete: 1981. VIII. 1. What could have been their intention with this? But we don’t even care about it because the place is beautiful and cozy, and sitting on a small bench we can also enjoy the view to the west. The three springs of Somló (the other two are the Márton spring on the eastern side and the Vásárhelyi well in the south) have been the most important water supply for wine growers for centuries, and fortunately they are also highly valued by the people of today. At that time, the head of the spring was built with the cooperation of the locals, as was the new outlet a few years ago.

Chapel of St. Ilona
47.1411, 17.36289

The predecessor of the chapel, the Church of the Holy Cross, is already mentioned in a 1399 charter. It could have been built by the Pauline Order of Tüskevár (at that time Nagyjenő) and presumably perished during the Turkish occupation. But its memory remained and was rebuilt in the 19th century out of public donation. Recently it has been beautifully renovated. Here, stunning simplicity and gold dominate, next to the chapel with a brilliant golden roof stands a stone cross with a crucified Jesus painted in gold. If we look downwards, a wide-screen panorama unfolds, and if we look up, behind the chapel, we can admire the beautiful vineyard terraces.

5. Somló Juhfark Celebration

18/10/2020
World class wines and audience success

The winemakers of Somló organized the display of their iconic variety, the Somló Juhfark Celebration, for the fifth time this weekend. Tickets for the big tasting had already run out in advance, and if the organizers had not strictly limited the number of visitors due to the epidemic, on October 17, there would not have been room to swing a cat in the large event hall of the Tornai Winery.

At the tasting, guests could taste 24 Juhfark wines of 13 wineries, the whole range of white wines, from light reductive to traditional and modern barrel-aged and late-harvest dessert wines. But they had one thing in common: outstanding quality by international standards. Somló has now regained its reputation in the world - as evidenced by countless international awards and dozens of Michelin-starred restaurants, and Juhfark has a prominent role in that. This variety best shows the unique terroir of Somló, providing a particular minerality.

The tasting also provided clear evidence of outstanding quality in international comparison. In one of the master classes of the event, Attila Fiáth (WSET) compared 4 Juhfark wines from Somló with 4 outstanding mineral wines from the international field. According to the expert, few Hungarian wines would be able to compete with white wines of this quality, and this was confirmed by the audience: in the blind tasting, in two cases the Juhfark was considered better, once the foreign challenger, and in one case there was a tie.

Ice wine can be made!

Dawn harvest at -8 degrees

Making ice wine is a risky task that requires a lot of patience and caution. But it's worth. This year we took the risk again and were successful, after 4 years we will have Ice Wine again!

The essence of making ice wine is that the grapes must be harvested frozen (at least -7 degrees) and immediately pressed. That is, the grapes ripened in the autumn must be left on the vine until the weather is so cold. By then, the grapes are losing a lot of their water content, they are withered, which make them much sweeter. Frost pressing further reduces the water content because water freezes faster than sugar and other dissolved solids of the grape, so that they can be maximally extracted, while only a few drops of ice water come out.

It sounds simple, but in practice it is very difficult to make. On the one hand, due to the increasingly warm weather, serious frosts are becoming less frequent, and in many cases the winegrower leaves the grapes out in vain and cannot make ice wine. On the other hand, the grapes must be protected from the wild animals, because of course they also love this sweet dessert. So there is a lot of risk and extra care, and the amount of wine will be about one tenth of that of a normal harvest.

But it's worth it. Ice wine is a very special kind of sweet wine, quite different from its companion botrytis or simple late harvest wine. Extremely concentrated and besides the high sugar content, its acids are the same as those of dry white wines, which results in a perfect balance.

Now it all worked out for us. The perfectly healthy, withered Zeus withered rapes left in the vineyard were severely frosted last night, we started harvesting at -8 at dawn we were done pressing before noon. So, we are excited to announce that we will have our 2019 vintage ice wine after 2015! The previous, 2015 vintage ice wine won four gold medals at Hungarian and international wine competitions, including the AWC Vienna. You can read about this wine here, and can buy it with one click.

Assortment tasting

We tasted our new wines

One of the most exciting events of the year is the January “assortment tasting”, when we taste all the wines in the cellar that have not been bottled yet - of course, we are most curious about the new wines. We started it with great expectations as it was a good vintage last year, in the rain-free, warm, long autumn the grapes became ripe nicely.

We harvested good quality grapes, but the total quantity was 30% less. The main problem was that there was little rain in the summer and we got it in the wrong distribution. In May, the weather was cool and rainy, which was not optimal for grape flowering: some varieties had looser bunches, while others had different berry sizes due to prolonged flowering.

Harvest temperatures could have been a problem, but we now have the tools to counteract the effects of the warm weather. (If the harvested grapes are warmer than optimal, which now happens regularly, then unwanted fermentation processes will start before pressing.) In our new processor, we begin to cool the mash immediately after harvesting, and a slightly prolonged fermentation took place.

Our Juhark wines are of excellent quality (due to the rainy weather, of course, it took more work to keep this particularly sensitive variety healthy), besides the furmint and zenit are worth highlighting. Our Friss and Estate Wines will be available from mid-February.

Of course, we still have to wait for the Premium and Top Selection wines, the latter ones are still battonaged, but also developing nicely, and our ice wine harvested in January has started to ferment as well.

Our new plant

Vertical grape processing - with horizontal tools

This topic is unlikely to make the reader exited: the consumer is generally not interested in launching a new production line, plant, or any facility at any company, even if it's their favorite brand. Here, however, the situation is different. We have launched a plant this weekend that guarantees the preservation of the harvested grapes quality. And without it, you simply can't make good wine. As if a car manufacturer were saying that without a new factory, you cannot be sure that your car will meet the requirements. That's different and the new plant might be interesting, right?

This topic is unlikely to make the reader exited: the consumer is generally not interested in launching a new production line, plant, or any facility at any company, even if it's their favorite brand. Here, however, the situation is different. We have launched a plant this weekend that guarantees the preservation of the harvested grapes quality. And without it, you simply can't make good wine. As if a car manufacturer were saying that without a new factory, you cannot be sure that your car will meet the requirements. That's different and the new plant might be interesting, right?

By building the new processing facility, we have taken two big steps to ensure the outstanding quality of our wines. On the one hand, we don't use a pump in the plant, and on the other hand, the whole process is cooled. Gently processed grapes give a better quality wine, as bypassing the pump it is guaranteed that no secondary (vinegar) fermentation will start, so the wine will have better acidity. Cooling is important because harvested grapes retain their important flavors at low temperatures, so these flavors can be preserved in the wine. However, the climate is getting hotter and the harvest can take place even in summer temperatures. A sunny bunch of grapes harvested at 30 degrees can be 40 degrees hot, which is dramatically far from ideal.

The details:
The so called vertical processing is widely used in the world to replace pumping, where the steps of the process are placed underneath each other, not side by side, so that the raw material reaches the right place by gravity (ie without the use of a pump). This requires the construction of huge towers, which we ruled out, as they would ruin the Somló landscape. We had to find a solution that would achieve the desired result but fit into a building of normal height. That is, we can perform horizontal processing - with vertical tools. In addition, we also wanted to solve the cooling. To do this, we took a thorough look around the world and by adapting different solutions we designed and built the ideal plant for us.

The key to the system is the 6 cooled 4.000 liters mobile soaking tanks. The first step is to bring the pre-cooled tank by a special forklift to the transport vehicle that brought in the grapes. The truck lifts its load, and pours the grapes into the tank, which is then returned to the dock by the forklift. At the docking walkway, a quick coupler can be used to connect cooling, cooling control and must drain. The tank is easy to operate from the sidewalk, so we can mix the mash during the cooled soaking. And the tank has a double bottom, the upper – perforated – bottom plate holds the grapes, but the must flows through it and goes to the lower part, from where it gets into the cellar by gravity through a pipe. When the grapes are no longer draining juice, the forklift raises the tank again, brings it to the press, tilts it and as if it were a glass pours the grapes into the press. (Incidentally, these kind of forklifts are used in foundries too.)

The must produced during pressing is placed in a settling tank, cooled to 8 degrees overnight, then it is lowered into the cellar - where we can start making wine with the best possible quality. By the way, with 6 tanks, we can process 38000 kg (5 hectares of grapes) a day, so we offer the processing to other Somló wineries as a service.

We consider it particularly important that the related investments make the development completely environmentally friendly. We provide solar power and a wastewater treatment plant, so we do not take contaminated water out of the area, the water is only borrowed for use and is returned to the Somló water system cleaned.

Another Trophy Award from London

At London’s International Wine Challenge, the world's most prestigious wine competition, the Tornai Winery won another Trophy Award after the previous three. This time, the 2017 Top Selection Grófi Hárslevelű was awarded the highest award. The Trophy winners are chosen from the gold medalists of the 15,000 participants. In addition to Hárslevelű, the Tornai Juhfark and Zenit are also soaring.

Now it’s official: we got our fourth International Wine Challenge Trophy award with the 2017 Top Selection Grófi Hárslevelű. Such a result is unprecedented in Hungary and is also rare in the world.

The IWC is one of the largest wine competitions in the world, and its judging process is the most rigorous. In the multi-turn process, the nominated wines are evaluated by three committees with at least 10 jury members with a long professional experience. More than 15,000 wines are nominated from nearly 50 countries worldwide each year, only 500 of them receive gold medals, and the Trophy Prize winners are chosen from the gold medalist by a new tasting. So a Trophy winner is the best of the bests. It is a special pleasure that all three of our wines have been rewarded: besides the Trophy, the Top 2017 Selection Gróf Juhfark won gold medal and the 2016 Premium Juhfark became bronze medalist. And there are two more important details: our gold medalists wines were given 95 points out of a maximum of 100, so these two wines are among the world's top 150 wines. From Hungary, Apart from us, only Tokaj sweet wines have been given gold: the Patrícius Wine House, the Vaxco Vineyards and the Royal Tokaji Winery, we congratulate them heartily.

As it is said, one good result at a wine competition can be luck as well, as one good wine can be the result of lucky coincidences. But to produce high quality constantly, year after year, and to achieve good results in every competition is the privilege of the bests. Influental world competitions are particularly important – not only because of the guaranteed standard of judjing, but also because of the international attention that opens up new, important markets.

It is interesting to see how similar our results are, whether it is a domestic competition, the selection of the wines of the Hungarian Science Academy or a big world competition. So far this year, we have won 5 gold and 12 silver medals at national and world competitions, the most successful variety is Juhfark (Aranyhegy 2015, 2016, Grófi 2017, Prémium 2016) with 8 awards. Zenit 2018 was awarded 7 medals alone, while 2018 Grófi Hárslevelű was awarded 5 medals. Zenit was also chosen as the wine of the Hungarian Science Academy in 2019. So indigenous and local varieties of Somló and Hungary perform best, which again proves that in the ever more intense competition all over the world we can really be successful with the unique and limited wines characterized by our special terroir and varieties.

And the year is long, we look forward to the sequel! Finally the tasting notes of our IWC awarded wines:

Top Selection Grófi Hárslevelű, 2017
This is rich and honeyed, yet has precision. With a saline edge to the vital pear and peach fruit and a hint of sweetness. Big and balanced, Lovely stuff!

Top Selection Grófi Juhfark 2017
Sumptuous but vigourous, with tense, salty acidity offset by rich lightly honeyed fruit. The glossy texture and weight make this a great food wine for spiced dishes.

Prémium Juhfark, 2016
Gooseberry and ripe lemon, with notes of marmalade, honey and a fresh light perfume lead to a fine finish.
