Making wine, building a winery and bringing it to success is not simply a business. It is a passion, an integral part of your life - whether you've been a part of it since childhood or you became captivated by it as an adult. We have been producing grapes and making wine on Somló since 1946, the Tornai Winery started with the momentum of the post-war rebuilding effort, and decades of continuous construction have made it one of the most significant family estates on Somló.  

In the best vineyards  of the hill, we mainly grow the indigenous grape varieties. Wine made from these can best showcase the volcanic taste of Somló, which is one of a kind in the world.

We strive to make the most perfect wines, as shown by a number of
major international accolades as well. We are most proud of our 4 Trophy Awards at the International Wine Challange in London. But we don’t just offer wines, we also offer events. Experiences that Somló, this unique hill, will make forever memorable.

Secondly, indigenous grape varieties are able to display the characteristics of the soil in the wine with special minerality. And thirdly, the weather conditions of the hill protruding from the plain, are particularly favorable for the grape: it remains healthy and ripens perfectly. In the cellar, all we have to do is combine centuries of experience and state-of-the-art procedures to make the wine from the exceptional raw material in such a way as to showcase the speciality of the hill as beautifully as possible.

We provide a free hiking map, we offer vineyard tours with tasting for groups. In addition, we will take you on a journey to the past in our museum. Sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine, you can enjoy the wonderful Somló landscape in all seasons, and in the restaurant, you can taste the excellent dishes prepared by our chef on the weekends. And of course, we offer wine tastings and wine dinners.

Our story

Endre Tornai, the founder, started viticulture and winemaking in 1946 on a 2.5 acre plantation. Today, the estate is 170 acres, and the third generation is already involved in the work. In addition to respecting traditions, we use the most modern viticulture and grape processing technologies, and innovation is a constant element of our 75-year history. Our wines are offered in several European and American Michelin-starred restaurants and perform excellently at major domestic and international competitions year after year.
